What does School Readiness’ really mean?

The transition between early childhood and school is an extremely crucial period in children’s development. Early childhood education programs are valuable interventions to support children in developing appropriate school-readiness skills to facilitate the transition to formal schooling. Apart from academic skills like reading, writing and counting, there is much more that a child requires in order to successfully sustain in a school environment. Some of these basic and important skills involve the ability to understand and express, being able to be a part of a peer group, execute instructions, ability to cope up with distractions and so on..

 

How can you tell if your Child is ready for school?

There are a broad range of skills that are focused on when we talk about ‘School Readiness’.

These include: Receptive Language (understanding) Your child’s ability to understand the words they hear. e.g., understanding a teacher’s instructions and understanding stories.

School Readiness Program focuses on training the children in fundamental academic skills including essential education, personal management, classroom versatility and group learning abilities that is required for effective school integration.

  • Expressive language

    Being able to speak clearly and use sentences that can be understood by other people (e.g., talking to other kids or other adults)

  • Articulation

    Being able to clearly say individual sounds in words. By the age of 5, children should be able to use most speech sounds, but still may have difficulties with ‘s’, ‘r’, ‘l’, and ‘th’.

  • Social Skills

    Being able to follow social norms (e.g. taking turns in conversation and looking at the speaker), get along with other children, solve social problems, and being able to play with other children

  • Emotional Development

    Being able to speak clearly and use sentences that can be understood by other people (e.g., talking to other kids or other adults)

We provide services for managing and improving the range of talents stated below.

  • Independent routine management (e.g., unpacking bags, entering a classroom, going to the bathroom, getting snack, lining up for playtime, etc.)
  • Age-appropriate academic, motor skills such as literacy, numeracy, drawing, cutting, pasting.
  • Social skills and interaction skills (e.g., turn taking, teacher and peer interaction, etc.)
  • Following teacher’s instructions and other classroom rules.
  • Group skills and activities.
  • Cognitive skills and Leadership skills.
  • Sitting and attending during class instruction.
